Dr. Ali Dehghantanha (CISSP, CISM)
Director – Cyber Science Lab, University of Guelph
Director – Master of Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence Program – University of Guelph
Dr. Dehghantanha is a leader in the field of cybersecurity and digital forensics. He has achieved a strong track record of innovation and excellence throughout his career as an independent researcher. Dr. Dehghantanha is a Senior Member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) which is awarded to professionals who can demonstrate a significant performance. He has been an invited or keynote speaker at 16 national and international conferences and has published 44 peer-reviewed papers in top journals, three books, 28 book chapters and 11 peer-reviewed conference papers. His scientific works have amassed 2,800 citations to date (h-index: 31; i10-index: 77; Google Scholar, Jan 2020). In 2015, he was awarded a prestigious EU Marie Curie International Incoming Research Fellowship in “Privacy Respecting Digital Forensics” worth 250,000 Euro. The Marie-Curie Fellowships are Europe’s most competitive and prestigious research awards. Upon completing his fellowship, he joined the Security of Advanced Systems Group in the University of Sheffield – UK. He joined the University of Guelph as an assistant professor and Director of the Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence Master’s program in August 2018.
Dr. Dehghantanha’s research is highly regarded and well-funded. He has attracted more than $350 K in competitive research funding since joining the University of Guelph in Fall 2018. Dr. Dehghantanha was awarded a grant (as PI) from the Department of National Defense Canada to build a cyber threat attribution system, which has been commercialized by a start-up company (http://griffinix.com/) and is now publicly available at www.cyberthreatattribution.com. In April 2019, Dr. Dehghantanha was awarded an NSERC Discovery Grant as an Early Career Researcher to support his proposed research program titled “Artificial Intelligence-Aided Digital Forensics Examination”. He was awarded with a grant of $33 K per year (2019-2024), which is above the $29,421 national average according to the evaluation group to which he submitted his application (1507, Computer Science). Dehghantanha is among the pioneers of using machine learning (ML) for cyber threat hunting. His investigation methods have been adopted and referenced in several investigation cases. He has published papers in major forensics science journals including Journal of Science and Justice, Journal of Forensics Sciences, and Australian Journal of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Dehghantanha has also made significant contributions to the field of cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) forensics; he has published key papers in top IoT journals such as IEEE Internet of Things Journal, and ACM Transactions on Cyberphysical Systems. Moreover, Dr. Dehghantanha has published several papers in Future Generation Computer Systems, IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing, IEEE Access, IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computational Intelligence, IEEE Transactions in Sustainable Computing, and Elsevier Journal of Computer & Security — demonstrating the interdisciplinary and timely nature of his research advancements.
Dr. Dehghantanha’s innovative research program has attracted many gifted highly qualified personnel to his lab. In the past 5 years, he has supervised 2 PhD, 13 MSc and 5 BSc students. His trainees have appeared as authors on 29 journal papers and 14 book chapters. He has also co-supervised 3 PhD and 1 MSc students and served as an academic advisor for 4 PhD and 1 MSc students. His trainees have secured prestigious positions in academic, industry and/or government agencies.
Dr. Dehghantanha’s growing influence in this fast-moving field of research is evident in the leadership roles he has played in international settings. He is a chair of the Cyber Threat Intelligence and Analytics workshop, chaired the IEEE Workshop on ML for Security of Cyber-Physical Systems 2019, and was the publicity chair of the National Cyber Summit (NCS2019). Dr. Dehghantanha has also undertaken significant editorial activities. He is a member of the board of referees for the Elsevier journal titled Digital Investigation; and he has been a guest editor for top journals such as IEEE Transactions on Big Data, Future Generation Computer Systems, and ACM Transaction on Internet Technology.
